Can I Run Nier: Automata?

Nier: Automata is an action role playing game from Square Enix, released in 2017. Square Enix both developed and published it. It offers a single player campaign. Saves sync through Steam Cloud, so moving between machines does not cost progress. It carries 47 achievements. Being 9 years old, it was built for the hardware of its day, so a current machine usually has headroom over the published figures. The game ships for Windows alone. Steam lists support for 6 languages. Its Steam review count passes 114 thousand, a large enough sample that odd hardware behaviour would be known by now. Only some of the game is mapped to a controller. Its Metacritic score stands at 84.

Setting and environment

Nier: Automata places its action in an anime styled world, and the player works through one continuous open world. The publisher supplies 10 storefront screenshots of these environments. Open environments are the harder case for a PC, and Nier: Automata has to keep far more of its world resident and streaming than a level based game needs.

Why Nier: Automata is demanding

Demand in Nier: Automata is ordinary. The publisher has NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980 VRAM in mind, which our tables place around the RTX 3060. The install is small at roughly 50 GB. Nier: Automata needs 64 bit Windows. The distance between minimum and recommended is wide, so Nier: Automata at the floor and Nier: Automata at the recommended tier are not the same experience. Nier: Automata needs only 8 GB of RAM. Its stated video memory figure is modest at 4 GB, so on Nier: Automata the speed of the graphics chip binds before its memory does.

This reading comes from the published requirements and our own benchmark tables, not from the store listing.

Can you run Nier: Automata?

100%
Can run iton a typical modern PC (Ryzen 5 5600, RTX 3060, 16 GB RAM), the graphics card is the tightest fit.

Older hardware holds up here: Nier: Automata runs on modest graphics, with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 VRAM 2GB or AMD Radeon R9 270X VRAM 2GB enough to meet the minimum. Add 4 GB of RAM and a mid-range CPU and a PC several years old will play it fine.

Bottleneck: GPU

Projected by resolution

ResolutionProjectionHeadroom
1080pComfortable1.73x
1440pBorderline0.98x
4KBelow the bar0.43x

A projection, not a measurement. We scale the published GPU requirement by pixel count, since 1440p draws 1.78 times the pixels of 1080p and 4K draws 4 times as many, then compare against RTX 3060 / Ryzen 5 build. The publisher did not state a target resolution, so 1080p is assumed as the baseline. We hold no frame rate data, so no FPS figure is claimed. Headroom above 1 means the reference machine has room to spare at that resolution.

Each card is compared against Nier: Automata's published GPU requirement, assuming an otherwise-capable PC. Laptop rows use the real mobile chip's benchmark, a mobile GPU is always slower than its desktop namesake.
