Can I Run Destiny 2?

Destiny 2 is an action adventure game from Bungie, released in 2019. Bungie both developed and published it. The game supports a single player campaign and cooperative play. Its 7 years mean the stated figures describe machines that were current then, not now. It is free to play at the base tier. It carries 23 achievements. Critics scored it 83 on Metacritic. Only some of the game is mapped to a controller. With more than 138 thousand player reviews on Steam, its behaviour on real hardware is well documented. Windows is the only supported platform, which is what the figures below describe. Steam lists support for 13 languages.

Setting and environment

Destiny 2 places its action in a science fiction setting, and the player works through one continuous open world. Open environments are the harder case for a PC, and Destiny 2 has to keep far more of its world resident and streaming than a level based game needs. The publisher supplies 10 storefront screenshots of these environments. The view is from a first person view.

Why Destiny 2 is demanding

Destiny 2 is undemanding on the graphics side. Its NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 target sits well below our RTX 3060 reference, so most cards still in service clear Destiny 2. Destiny 2 wants about 105 GB of disk space, which is a real consideration on a smaller drive. At 8 GB, system memory is undemanding. At 4 GB, VRAM is a non issue for Destiny 2. Destiny 2 needs 64 bit Windows. Minimum and recommended sit far apart here, which usually means Destiny 2 scales hard with the hardware you give it.

This reading comes from the published requirements and our own benchmark tables, not from the store listing.

Can you run Destiny 2?

100%
Can run iton a typical modern PC (Ryzen 5 5600, RTX 3060, 16 GB RAM), the graphics card is the tightest fit.

Free up space before installing Destiny 2: it needs roughly 105 GB. Once it's on disk the rest is unremarkable, NVIDIA® GeForce® GTX 660 2GB or GTX 1050 2GB / AMD Radeon HD 7850 2GB and 6 GB of RAM meet the minimum, so most current PCs handle the compute side.

Bottleneck: GPU

Large install. Destiny 2 needs about 105 GB of free storage.

Projected by resolution

ResolutionProjectionHeadroom
1080pComfortable2.18x
1440pRuns well1.23x
4KBelow the bar0.54x

A projection, not a measurement. We scale the published GPU requirement by pixel count, since 1440p draws 1.78 times the pixels of 1080p and 4K draws 4 times as many, then compare against RTX 3060 / Ryzen 5 build. The publisher did not state a target resolution, so 1080p is assumed as the baseline. We hold no frame rate data, so no FPS figure is claimed. Headroom above 1 means the reference machine has room to spare at that resolution.
