Can I Run Beam?

Released in 2015, Beam is a racing simulation game built by BeamNG. The game supports a single player campaign. 13 languages are covered by the store listing. Being over ten years old, its ceiling was set by the hardware of a different era. Saves sync through Steam Cloud, so moving between machines does not cost progress. It carries 5 achievements. Windows is the only supported platform, which is what the figures below describe. Over 375 thousand players have left a Steam review, so this is a title whose performance is widely reported. Only some of the game is mapped to a controller.

Setting and environment

Players spend their time in an open sandbox, moving through one continuous open world. Open environments are the harder case for a PC, and Beam has to keep far more of its world resident and streaming than a level based game needs. The publisher supplies 15 storefront screenshots of these environments. It is played from a first person view.

Why Beam is demanding

Beam sits in the middle of the demand range, targeting Minimum, a tier a mainstream card from the last few generations reaches without difficulty. At 32 GB, the RAM requirement is the one most likely to catch an otherwise capable PC out. Disk footprint is light, near 60 GB. Beam needs 64 bit Windows. The distance between minimum and recommended is wide, so Beam at the floor and Beam at the recommended tier are not the same experience. It wants 8 GB of video memory, which rules out the 6 GB cards that are otherwise quick enough.

This reading comes from the published requirements and our own benchmark tables, not from the store listing.

Can you run Beam?

93%
Can run iton a typical modern PC (Ryzen 5 5600, RTX 3060, 16 GB RAM), system RAM is the tightest fit.

Beam is memory-hungry: it wants 16 GB of system RAM, above the 8 GB many machines still ship with. Graphically it is undemanding, Minimum 6GB VRAM (AMD Radeon RX 570 / Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060) clears the minimum, so more RAM, not a new GPU, is the upgrade most players need.

Bottleneck: RAM

Projected by resolution

ResolutionProjectionHeadroom
1080pBorderline1x
1440pBelow the bar0.56x
4KBelow the bar0.25x

A projection, not a measurement. We scale the published GPU requirement by pixel count, since 1440p draws 1.78 times the pixels of 1080p and 4K draws 4 times as many, then compare against RTX 3060 / Ryzen 5 build. The publisher did not state a target resolution, so 1080p is assumed as the baseline. We hold no frame rate data, so no FPS figure is claimed. Headroom above 1 means the reference machine has room to spare at that resolution.

Each card is compared against Beam's published GPU requirement, assuming an otherwise-capable PC. Laptop rows use the real mobile chip's benchmark, a mobile GPU is always slower than its desktop namesake.
