Open a laptop spec sheet and you will see familiar names: RTX 3060, RTX 4070, RX 6600. It is easy to assume the chip inside your laptop performs like the desktop card you have read about. It does not, and the gap is not small.

The name is shared. The silicon, the power budget, and the cooling are not. A desktop graphics card sits in a large case with dedicated fans and a power connector that can feed it a high, sustained wattage. A laptop has to fit the same class of chip into a thin chassis, share a battery and a small cooling system with the CPU, and stay quiet enough to sit on your lap. To make that work, the mobile version runs at a much lower power limit than the desktop part with the same name.

That power limit is the whole story. Two laptops can both advertise the same GPU and still perform differently from each other, because the manufacturer chooses how much power to give the chip. A model built for a slim ultraportable will run the GPU conservatively; a thick gaming laptop with aggressive cooling will let the same chip draw more and run faster. The name on the box tells you almost nothing about where in that range a specific laptop lands.

This is exactly where most "can I run it" checks quietly get it wrong. They look up "RTX 3060", find the desktop card's performance, and score your laptop against a game as if it had that card. The verdict comes back rosier than reality. You buy the game, or worse you buy the laptop, expecting desktop-class frame rates and get something slower.

We treat mobile parts as their own entries. When the benchmark tables contain real data for a specific mobile chip, a laptop variant appears as its own row, clearly labelled, and it is judged on that mobile data rather than on a desktop number with a discount stapled to it. If we do not have verified data for a mobile part, we leave it out rather than guess. A made-up laptop verdict is worse than no verdict, because it looks just as confident as a real one.

There is a second reason laptop and desktop cards diverge: memory. A desktop card and its mobile cousin do not always ship with the same amount of video memory, and the mobile version sometimes carries less. For a game that leans on VRAM, the amount of memory can matter more than raw speed. A fast chip that runs out of memory will stutter where a slower chip with enough memory stays smooth. So when you compare a laptop against a demanding title, the question is not only "is this chip fast enough" but "does it have the memory the game asks for."

What should you take away from this? First, when you look up a laptop's GPU, ignore the temptation to map it onto the desktop card of the same name. They are different products. Second, pay attention to the specific laptop model, not just the chip, because the power limit set by the manufacturer changes the result. Third, prefer a tool that tells you plainly when it is reasoning about a real mobile part versus when it has no data. Honest gaps beat confident guesses.

The short version: a mobile GPU is always slower than the desktop chip it is named after, and how much slower depends on the laptop it lives in. Treat the name as a starting point for research, not as an answer.
