Running models completely inside the video memory ensures the fastest possible processing speeds.
To fit larger models into the 8 GB limit you must use quantized versions. Quantization reduces the precision of model weights to save space. The best quantization column shows the optimal compromise between model accuracy and memory usage. For example Mochi 1 is a 10B model that fits using the Q4_K_M quantization which consumes 7.3 GB of memory. Gemma 2 9B fits at Q4_K_M using exactly 8 GB of memory.
Several 9B models fit comfortably using the Q5_K_M quantization which requires 7.7 GB of memory. When a model exceeds the 8 GB video memory you must offload layers to the system RAM. This offload process allows you to run larger models but it reduces generation speed. We assume a system with 32 GB of system RAM. Open-Sora 2.0 is an 11B model requiring 8.1 GB at Q4_K_M and 10.1 GB of system RAM. FLUX.1 dev is a 12B model requiring 14.4 GB at FP8 / optimized and 16.4 GB of system RAM.
